Motive’s Tablet set for San Fran

UK-based Motive Television is poised to launch a new app for mobile tablet devices that could enable viewers in the US to watch network television on the go.

Tablet TV, which is a joint venture between Motive and US channels group Granite Broadcasting Corporation, allows viewers to watch and record all subscription-free, live HD television directly onto tablets via an over-the-air signal transmitted to a small antenna.

The use of the antenna means people can watch television on their handheld devices without wi-fi, mobile signal or a subscription.

The app, which will also incorporate an on-demand function and the ability to interact with social media, is set to launch in San Francisco later this year in partnership with local broadcaster KOFY-TV, part of Granite.

Tablet TV also plans to make free, live, HD broadcast channels available, including networks from ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and PBS, without the need for a cable, satellite or internet connection.

Recent research commissioned by Tablet from US-based Frank N Magid Associates suggest that nearly a third of all tablet owners would consider themselves very likely to use the new service. The research also found that the 25-54 demographic was “very interested” in Tablet TV, with the US Hispanic audience particularly likely to use the app.

It’s the latest venture attempting to provide US consumers with mobile access to live TV and comes after the recent court case that forced internet start-up Aereo to cease its business.

Unlike Aereo, Motive says Tablet TV has been developed with broadcasters and does not retransmit any content, instead enabling devices to pick up the original transmission.
