Mindy Kaling signs Warner Bros overall deal

Mindy Kaling, the star of US comedies The Mindy Project and The Office, has agreed an exclusive multi-year deal with Warner Bros Television Group (WBTVG).

Mindy Kaling

Kaling will develop, write and produce new television productions covering original comedy and drama, longform and event scripted series, unscripted and digital content across all platforms, including broadcast, pay networks and OTT.

Her production company, Kaling International, will produce new series in association with Warner Bros Television, Warner Horizon Scripted Television and WBTVG’s digital studio, Blue Ribbon Content. Warner Bros International Television Distribution will distribute the programmes around the world.

The deal is Kaling’s first with the studio and follows WBTVG’s agreement with Ava DuVernay and her production shingle Forward Movement, which began last month.

Prior to signing with Warner Bros, Kaling had been involved with a string of high-profile productions and was creator, exec producer and star of Fox and Hulu comedy The Mindy Project.

More recently, Amazon paid US$13m for her comedy feature Late Night. She is also writer and exec producer on the series remake of classic UK romcom Four Weddings & a Funeral which was commissioned by streamer Hulu.

Kaling also starred in, wrote for and exec produced NBC comedy The Office, penning 24 episodes and garnering six Emmy nominations.

The deals with DuVernay and Kaling, for which terms were not disclosed, continue WBTVG’s strategy of collaborating with the leading TV talent in an age when streamers are tying up creatives in major overall deals.

Last summer, amidst a flurry of multimillion-dollar agreements for SVoD giant Netflix, Warner Bros secured a US$300m overall pact with prolific producer Greg Berlanti.
