MGM takes on Latin superhero El Gato Negro

US studio MGM Television is developing a series based on Hispanic comic book series El Gato Negro: Nocturnal Warrior.

Diego Boneta

The comic book, written by Richard Dominguez, focuses on social worker Francisco ‘Pancho’ Guerrero who adopts his grandfather’s former alter ego El Gato Negro to bring justice to the criminals plaguing the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

The new series will star Diego Boneta (Rock of Ages) as the title character. Boneta will also exec produce through his Three Amigos shingle, working alongside chairman of MGM Television Mark Burnett and co-exec producer Joel Novoa (Arrow). Andrew Mittman, MGM’s senior VP of television production and development, will oversee the series.

MGM Television will produce and distribute the series globally. A showrunner and writers are currently being recruited.

“I know that bringing this Latin superhero-led series to the screen is a great responsibility and a huge challenge, but I couldn’t have a better partner than MGM,” Boneta said.
