Mediawan confirms Palomar deal

The Name of the Rose begins broadcasting on Rai1 today

French investment firm Mediawan has confirmed it has taken a majority stake in Palomar, the Italian producer of detective series Inspector Montalbano and The Name of the Rose.

Mediawan has acquired a 53% stake in Palomar, marking the company’s first acquisition outside of France, with plans to extend that to 72% later this year.

The remaining 28% will continue to be held by Carlo Degli Esposti, founder and CEO of Palomar.

The deal, which was first revealed in January, means Palomar will join other recent acquisitions including producer-distributor AB Group, EuropaCorp’s French TV division and Clark Costelle & Co, which is behind Apocalypse: The Second World War.

The Name of the Rose, which has been sold to networks including Sundance in the US and the BBC in the UK, is set to start broadcasting on Rai1 today. Its cop show Inspector Montalbano has also been sold worldwide, including to BBC4 in the UK, while Palomar is also behind an Italian remake of French drama Call My Agent! and movie The Paranza dei Bambini.

Mediawan was set up by media entrepreneurs Pierre-Antoine Capton, Xavier Niel and Matthieu Pigasse in 2017 as an acquisitions company targeting the media content and entertainment industries in Europe.

The company, which raised €250m (US$283m) for its launch on the Paris Euronext stock market, has also acquired the 35% stake it didn’t already own in TV network RLT9 last year.

Mediawan said the deal “marks the starting point of the group’s international expansion with the ambition to strengthen European synergies in terms of coproduction and co-distribution.”
