Mattel, Nick enrol at Monster High

Monster High: The Adventures of the Ghoul Squad on YouTube

US toy company Mattel and kids’ network Nickelodeon have joined forces to produce a new animated series and film musical version of the Monster High franchise.

Originally released as dolls, the property has also aired as various TV specials on Nickelodeon since 2010. In addition, more than 180 episodes of a Monster High shortform web series and spin-off Monster High: Adventures of the Ghoul Squad were made available on YouTube between 2010 and 2015.

The rebooted animated series and live-action musical film will debut in 2022.

Shea Fontana is showrunner for the animated series while Claudia Spinelli, senior VP of animation development at Nickelodeon, will oversee production.

The TV movie will be produced by Zack Olin, senior VP for live-action, and Shauna Phelan, senior VP for live action scripted content at Nickelodeon. Adam Bonnett will be the executive producer for Mattel.

Nickelodeon is also currently working on an animated adaptation of the Star Trek franchise, as it follows a strategy of expanding global franchises into TV series and films.

Ramsey Naito, president of Nickelodeon Animation, said: “These classic monsters have always captured kids’ imaginations. We have terrific partners on board at Mattel to create original content in different formats.”
