Russia’s NTV lines up Masked Singer

The Masked Singer became an international hit after debuting on Fox

Russian network NTV has become the latest international broadcaster to commission a local version of break-out format success The Masked Singer.

Endemol Shine-owned Russian prodco Weit Media will produce a nine-episode first season of the Russian version which is due to launch next month.

The format originated in South Korea as King of Mask Singer before being picked up by US broadcast network Fox, where it became an international sensation. Versions have been popping up all around the world ever since, including on ITV in the UK and TF1 in France.

The show sees celebrities perform songs while dressed in elaborate costumes and masks, with a panel of judges charged with guessing who is behind the disguise.

The Russian production will be the fifth to be produced by an Endemol Shine company, with Endemol Shine North America launching the original US version for Fox, along with hit series in Mexico, Germany and, most recently, Italy.

Fox subsequently took production of its version in-house when it launched its new entertainment studio last year.

In related news, Weit Media has secured a second season of entertainment format All Together Now on rival Russian network Rossiya 1.

The 10-episode first season helped the channel to take first place in the weekly ratings when it premiered in a primetime slot this month.
