China, a country the size of Europe, hosts an incredibly diverse range of habitats, which support some of the world’s most remarkable and endangered animals.
The Panda’s Kingdom is a haven for 2,000 giant pandas, who raise their cubs in bamboo forests, alongside 10,000 other species. A red and white giant flying squirrel searches for tasty fruits, crested ibises court and nest among the rice paddies, and takins make daring migrations.
The Island Rainforests of tropical Hainan are home to exotic species, many unique to the island. Flying lizards battle in the treetops, climbing stream crabs settle in tree hollows and a king cobra defends its nest from other snakes.
The Roof of the World spans the largest and highest plateau on Earth – the Qinghai-Tibet plateau – where life must adapt to survive extreme altitudes. A wolf pack hunts Tibetan wild donkeys, Himalayan vultures fight for dining rights, and white-lipped deer undergo spectacular mating stampedes.
Siberian Tiger Country, in China’s far northeast, is a haven for big cats, from elusive Amur leopards, to majestic tigers on the hunt. In vast temperate forests, sika deer stay alert to predators, pit vipers hunt oriental fire-bellied toads and sables poach squirrels’ food hoards.
The Mythical Mountains of Wuyi host one of the world’s most biodiverse habitats, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A corpse flower lures insects with foul scents, a spiny toad finds a suitable mating spot, and a pied falconet chick learns to fly.
