Henry Edgecomb is a psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health, where he has just been named director. Henry’s daily mission is to ease the suffering of his patients. He is married to Anne Beaumont, a psychologist in private practice. Anne is an honorable woman who can be demanding with those she loves. She and Henry have two children: William, 17, who tends to be overly sensitive; and Marianne, 19, an opinionated young woman who has lately begun to assert herself by rejecting authority. Henry and Anne are loving parents who, like everyone else, must cope with the ups and downs of daily life.

Mystery comes into play from the opening episode. Anne is to meet Henry for dinner at a restaurant at the end of a long workday, but she fails to turn up, which is unusual, given her punctual nature. Henry soon becomes anxious and after only a few hours he contacts the authorities. Anne’s disappearance raises numerous questions. Is someone out to get her? Is it someone close to her? A patient? Or is it someone from Henry’s practice, given that he deals with patients who can be highly volatile? The pool of suspects is deep, and the possibilities are endless. An investigation is launched, led by Sylvia Voss and her partner Danny Marsh. They scrutinise the lives of the entire Edgecomb family, as well as those of their friends and patients.

This gripping and suspenseful tale set in the fascinating and little-known world of mental health care – with all its dark byways.
