In times where few commissioners want to take risks and strong intellectual properties take the global audiovisual scene by storm, Scenic Right’s IP-based business model has led the company to commercialize the rights of more than 200 books that are currently becoming series, miniseries or films in 12 countries.
In general terms, how does the Scenic Rights business model work?
At Scenic Rights we represent the adaptation rights of novels and original projects, through the collaboration with publishers, literary agencies, and independent writers.
We collaborate with more than 70 publishers and literary agencies, including some of the most prominent companies in the Spanish-speaking world. Thanks to this, we are able to offer the audiovisual sector an extensive, diverse, and carefully curated selection of stories.
Could you specify the company’s most relevant content agreements recently?
As of today, over 200 series, miniseries and films based on IPs managed by Scenic Rights are in development or pre-production in over 12 countries.
We continue to offer an attractive catalog oriented to literary audiovisual adaptations. During Mipcom 2023, we will present our latest additions, which also include titles like Al final siempre ganan los monstruos (Juarma), El coleccionista de flechas (Cristian Perfumo), La visitante (Alberto Chimal), El amante de Janis Joplin (Élmer Mendoza), Bilogía Atormentados (Ana Coello), El año en que nació el demonio (Santiago Roncagliolo), La última muerte de Goodrow Hill (Santiago Vera), La vía Damna (Francisca Solar) and La perra (Alberto Val), among other highly successful literary IPs.
Other new book titles available for the international market include El libro negro de las horas (Eva García Saez de Urturri), Nadie en esta tierra (Víctor del Árbol), La nación de las bestias (Mariana Palova), Cuando nadie te ve (José Ignacio Valenzuela), Frustración (B. Tavern), and Sensación Térmica (Mayte López), among many others.
What would you say are the company’s key commercial milestones in the last years?
In 2023, more than 12 premium productions based on IPs managed by Scenic Rights have been announced, including Reina Roja, Apocalipsis Z and Los Farad (Amazon), Invitación a un Asesinato (Netflix), Sira (Atresmedia), and Detective Toure (TVE – DeAPlaneta).
Additionally, in 2023 we had the premiere of Zorras (AtresPlayer), El último vagón (Netflix), and Los Artistas (ViX), which added to the premieres of other productions from previous years, such as La cocinera de Castamar (Atresmedia), La Templanza (Amazon), Memorias de Idhún (Netflix), Hernán, el hombre (Amazon, A&E), and Magic for humans, Mago Pop (Netflix).
How important coproduction is for the company?
While coproduction is not our main business model, due to the presence of Scenic Rights in the audiovisual market, our network of contacts and the strategic position we hold as the leading provider of IPs in the Spanish-speaking world, we have started to explore it in recent years, mainly looking to support international projects.
We have a few coproduction works underway, even though we cannot disclose them due to confidentiality reasons. Furthermore, Scenic Rights has been advocating for co-productions are supporting this business model for some time, as we knew that this business model would inevitably become predominant with the arrival of streaming platforms.
What are the key elements to adapt a book to the screen?
A solid plot, well developed characters, and a scenario that is feasible to develop with the current technology.
