Iriomote lies on the western-most edge of Japan, part of the southern islands of Okinawa. 80 percent of the remote island is covered with thick primeval forest, its coastline holds Japan’s largest mangrove forest, and coral reefs surround it from the sea. The program captures on film the rare animals that make Iriomote so unique – like the Iriomote cat, a wild cat found only on the island, whose population size is said to be of 100 or so individuals. Another is the endangered crested serpent eagle, or the ruddy kingfisher, or the tiny creatures that inhabit the mangrove forest and coral reefs. Filmed over six months, it is a document of the rich fabric of life that make up the one-of-a-kind island.
An international co-production between NHK and NDR/Doclights. Available in 4K/HD.
