In 1790, an elite Hawaiian warrior, or kūkini, is tasked with a deadly mission: to leave his family behind and gather intelligence on the bloody war being waged by Kamehameha against the island of Maui. The film, which is rooted in historical events like the Battle of Kepaniwai, follows the warrior as he navigates a landscape rife with conflict and danger.
His mission takes a critical turn when he is captured by the enemy. In a miraculous twist, he is saved by an unexpected individual who has a vital message of their own for him to deliver. This encounter forces him to confront deeper themes of love for his land (ʻāina), family, and people, as he races against time to return home and deliver information that could potentially change the course of the war.
