Those Who Lived (aka Les Vivants), a drama about the survivors of the terrorist attacks at the Bataclan theatre 10 years ago, tops the Mipcom slate for Federation Studios. Here, the series creator, director and coproducer Jean-Xavier de Lestrade and Monica Levy, co-head of distribution at Federation International, discuss the project.
What motivated you to take on Those Who Lived, given the sensitivity of the Bataclan attacks?
Jean-Xavier de Lestrade: In March 2023, towards the end of filming Sambre, I was approached by two film producers, Nicolas Mauvernay and Jérôme Corcos. They offered me the chance to work on a project about the 13 November 2015 attacks. Having already explored the tragic subject matter extensively in Laetitia and Sambre, I was craving something lighter, so my initial reaction was to refuse — but that quickly passed. The subject of the attacks is a highly sensitive topic that raises many questions about the role of fiction in representing the unspeakable. It’s a fascinating line of thinking. As for lightness, I would have to wait a little longer.
