Alice Roberts embarks on a quest for the truth behind Britain’s Holy Grail legend. Beginning on the Isle of Wight, she explores the story of Joseph of Arimathea and the Grail. Uncovering local folklore and learning how oral traditions change stories before heading to Glastonbury. Did Joseph bury the Grail beneath the Tor? Archaeologist Cheryl Green and Dr Andrew Boakye weigh the legend’s historic plausibility.
In Oxford’s Bodleian Library, Dr Dominic Selwood explains how the Grail link was added much later in literature, and how the Grail Romances linked in King Arthur. Heading to Wales, she finds passionate locals and unearths legends of sacred vessels and ancient cauldrons. Back at Glastonbury, she investigates Arthur’s grave, joining archaeologist Miles Russell on the Tor at sunset.
The trail leads to London and the Knights Templar, sparking questions about their possible Grail links. Heading to Scotland, Alice examines Holy Relics, investigating the conspiracy of Rosslyn Chapel concealing the Grail. Alice examines a wooden bowl found under the chapel in 1993. With scientific tests dating it post 1666, its origins remain unclear. Ultimately, in Temple, Edinburgh, Alice finds peace among Templar ruins, revealing that the Grail’s true power may lie in personal discovery…not physical proof.
