“The Invention of Surgery” tells in two episodes the hitherto hardly illuminated story from the beginning to the specialization of surgery, a journey through time from antiquity to the first performed heart surgery. We will meet physicians who, in the fight against diseases and in the search for knowledge, put their own health at risk. Who were these people? What are their stories? Moreover, how has the world changed since their discoveries? We will also shed light on the coincidences that once made these physicians heroes: random encounters at the right time, contaminations that became the key to breakthrough discoveries, research that proved to be a dead end, and years later enabled quantum leaps in medicine.
