"It is probably the most famous #MeToo crime in the Baroque art world. The victim is the eighteen-year-old painter Artemisia Gentileschi. The perpetrator: a well-known artist colleague of Artemisia's father. ""Forcibly deflowered and repeatedly carnally recognized"" - in March 1612, Roman court officials documented the entire course of the trial as precisely as the accusation.
Despite such trauma and societal constraints for women in the 17th century, Gentileschi rose to prominence as the first female member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno. To this day, the groundbreaking Italian Baroque painter is known for masterful depictions of powerful women in mythology and biblical narratives."
