Marcella returns to Netflix, ITV

Macella will run for a third season on ITV and Netflix next year

Global streaming giant Netflix and UK commercial broadcaster ITV have greenlit a third season of crime drama Marcella.

The series is the brainchild of The Bridge creator Hans Rosenfeldt and is produced by Tony Wood’s UK indie Buccaneer Media.

Anna Friel will again star as Marcella Backland when the drama returns to ITV in the UK and Ireland and Netflix globally in 2019.

The eight-part third run will delve further into the psychology of the troubled detective and will be co-created by Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder (The Tunnel) and executive-produced by Wood.

The agreement with Netflix was struck by Cineflix Rights, the UK-based sales and distribution division of Canada’s Cineflix Media, which holds exclusive international distribution rights to the show.

Polly Hill, head of drama at ITV, gave the new season the greenlight.
