Look Mom! hires for animated drama push

Toronto-based Look Mom! Productions, part of Blue Ant Studios, has appointed an animated series creator and director as its creative development director.

Sam Chou

Sam Chou has joined the company, which specialises in producing original animated content for teens and adults, in the new role.

Look Mom! said the position had been created as part of the company’s ongoing expansion in North America, where it wants to produce more adult animation projects.

Reporting to MD Josh Bowen, Chou will be tasked with leading Look Mom!’s creative development slate and introducing new projects, which he will produce and direct.

A 20-year production veteran, Chou’s career began as a traditional animator on feature films for Warner Bros, Sony, DreamWorks and Disney.

He went on to co-create and direct Crime: The Animated Series and develop and direct a slate of short films, series, commercials, web series and feature-length documentaries.

His past directorial experiences include animated comedy series City in Crisis (Mondo/Adult Swim Canada), CG action series Max Steel: Team Turbo (Mattel) and Kody Kapow (Universal Kids). In 2008, Chou founded animation studio Style5.tv.

“Sam is a highly sought-after creator and developer who brings a Swiss-army set of built-in tools to his leadership role at Look Mom! Productions, including raw talent and a keen eye for direction,” said Bowen.

“Sam’s vast experience also offers deep connections in the adult animation space across North America, which is critical to Look Mom!’s aspirations to produce scripted animated dramas.”

Look Mom!’s slate of programming includes Doomlands (Quibi), Adult Swim Canada’s Night Sweats, VRV’s Bigfoot, and Gary & His Demons for Mondo Channel on VRV (US), CBC Gem (Canada), Comedy Central (UK) and ABC Comedy (Australia).

The company is executive producing Ocean Village, currently in development at Fox, and is also known for digital shorts such as Don’t Feed the Humans, World Doctors and Crack-Duck.
