Lifetime lands Zeta-Jones drugs drama

A+E Networks-owned US cablenet Lifetime has greenlit a drama about real-life drugs kingpin Griselda Blanco starring Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Cocaine Godmother will be directed by Guillermo Navarro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Narcos) and is based on the life of Griselda Blanco, who was a pioneer of the Miami-based cocaine trade.

The crime drama, which will go into production this year and premiere in 2018 on Lifetime, is being produced by US prodco Asylum Entertainment, with Steven Michaels, Jonathan Koch, Joan Harrison and Alisa Tager executive producing.

The script is by David McKenna (American History X) and A+E Networks holds worldwide distribution rights to the show.

It is the latest drama to be based on Blanco’s life, following La Viuda Negra (The Black Widow) from Colombian channel Caracol and US network Univision.
