Levinsohn had been favourite to succeed Scott Thompson, having taken on the CEO role on an interim basis in May but was passed over for the permanent job.

A regulatory filing has now revealed he will leave the company today.

Before his run as interim CEO, he was Yahoo!’s executive VP and head of global media, a job that included leading content creation and production.

Programmes created on his watch included animated Tom Hanks vehicle Electric City, which comes from Hanks’ production outfit Playtone and Reliance Entertainment.

Prior to Yahoo!, Levinsohn was president of Fox Interactive Group before leaving in 2007 to launch Velocity Interactive Group (later known as Fuse Capital) with former AOL chairman Jonathan Miller.
