La La Land’s Chazelle picks Apple series

Apple’s commissioning splurge has continued with the US tech giant ordering a drama series from Damien Chazelle, Oscar-winning director of La La Land.

The as-yet untitled one-hour show, which has been ordered straight to series, will be written and directed by Chazelle with Media Rights Capital the attached studio, previously behind series including Ozark and House of Cards for Netflix.

Chazelle will exec produce alongside Jordan Horowitz (La La Land) from US label Original Headquarters and Fred Berger (La La Land) of prodco Automatik. Further details are yet to be revealed.

Apple has been ramping up its original orders since the turn of the year, commissioning shows including documentary series Home and futuristic drama See.

Other shows on the slate include a remake of Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi series Amazing Stories, a so-far untitled drama to be executive produced by Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon and a space series from Ronald D Moore (Star Trek).

Chazelle, who is already working on musical drama Eddy for Netflix, saw his La La Land movie garner six Academy Awards including Best Director. His previous films include Oscar winner Whiplash.

Apple’s content push follows the appointment of former Sony Pictures Television presidents Jamie Erlicht and Zach Van Amburg, who arrived in June to lead the company’s programming strategy.

Other significant hires include Amazon’s Morgan Wandell as head of international creative development and former Channel 4 chief creative officer Jay Hunt, who is leading efforts in Europe.
