Kudos co-founder starts drama indie

Kudos co-founder Stephen Garrett has launched his own drama indie and started developing a new series for US video streamer Hulu.

Garrett left the Spooks, Hustle, Life on Mars and The Tunnel producer in 2014, nearly 20 years after co-founding Kudos together with CEO Jane Featherstone. He was MD and chairman of the firm, which was acquired by Shine in 2007.

He has now launched Character Seven, a UK drama production house that is developing London-set supernatural series The Rock for Hulu. The firm is working with Fickle Fish and Lionsgate on the six-part project.

Character Seven is also a coproduction partner on forthcoming BBC and AMC John le Carré adaptation The Night Manager.

“There is no longer a barrier between television storytelling and film storytelling. The creative talent is flowing both ways and it respects neither national boundaries nor the size of the screen,” said Garrett.

“I have always been excited by new types of stories and new ways of telling them. With Character Seven I hope I can take this passion to the next level.”

The news comes just weeks after former Kudos CEO Featherstone resurfaced with her own indie prodco, Sister Pictures.
