KPN chief Ibarra named Sky Italia CEO

Sky Italia has named Maximo Ibarra as CEO, taking over from Andrea Zappia, who was promoted last year in the wake of Comcast’s buy-out of the European satcaster.

Ibarra stepped down as the boss of Dutch telco KPN yesterday, fuelling speculation that he was set to take up the vacant post in Italy.

The move was confirmed today and will see the Colombian-Italian relocate to the country where Sky has been stepping up its presence, with dramas including Gomorrah, The Young Pope, Catch 22 and Romulus.

The company is now poised to move into the broadband market and Zappia, who was handed oversight of Sky’s European operations outside the UK at the end of last year, said his skills would help the firm seize new opportunities.

Ibarra was chief of Italian mobile player Wind from 2012 to 2017 and oversaw its merger with rival 3 Italia. He said he was looking forward to helping Sky develop and expand its business at “a time of great industrial and technological transformation.”

The exec will take up his new post on October 1 and remains with KPN until then.
