Komixx captures Wattpad thriller rights

Transatlantic film and TV prodco Komixx Entertainment has secured the global screen rights to young-adult novel Captured.

Published by author Kelly Anne Blount on online storytelling platform Wattpad, Captured is a psychological thriller about a pair of sisters, one of whom is kidnapped.

It has recorded more than 16 million reads on Wattpad, and is the second Blount novel Komixx has optioned following the acquisition of Under in 2016. The deal was brokered by Jennifer Wills and Nicole Resciniti of Seymour Agency.

Speaking to C21 at Mipcom, Andrew Cole-Bulgin, Komixx’s group chief creative officer and head of film and TV, said although the project was in its very early stages, he had high hopes.

“We are just looking at writers at this moment in time,” he said. “Kelly-Anne Blount is someone we’ve followed for a number of years now; she’s a really good writer. She will have a big future ahead of her in digital publishing and traditional publishing, and we continue to get great feedback on these sorts of things.”

Captured builds on Komixx’s recent ventures into young-adult TV and film adaptations in the US and the UK, as well as its use of Wattpad to find suitable TV material.

The Kissing Booth, written by Beth Reekles, has recently been adapted as an original series for Netflix.

Komixx also acquired the worldwide screen rights to Robert Muchamore’s young-adult series Cherub.

Cole-Bulgin said there was big scope for Komixx in the young-adult scripted arena, and that new sources of IP like Wattpad were a boon for prodcos.

“There wasn’t much writing being done for the young-adult area when we first started,” he added. “Suddenly it became an opportunity for established writers and it’s an exciting medium to write for.
