KiKa taps BBCWW, Sesame for series

German children’s channel KiKa has acquired cartoons from BBC Worldwide (BBCWW) and Sesame Workshop to launch next year.

Muddle Earth

BBCWW’s Muddle Earth (26×11′) comes from CBBC’s in-house production team and is a parody of the Lord of the Rings novels, while CGI series Abby’s Flying Fairy School comes from US-based Sesame Workshop.

Both series with launch on KiKa in 2013 alongside previously announced acquisitions The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! (from Portfolio Entertainment), Mouk (Millimages), The Green Squad (Gaumont-Alphanim) and Florrie’s Dragon (Studio100).

KiKa’s head of fiction, acquisition and coproduction Sebastian Debertin told C21 2011 had been the channel’s “best year,” during which it had achieved a number of record-breaking results.

However, he warned the global economic downturn meant there were fewer “great projects in the pipelines” of local German and international prodcos. “And fewer investors and distribution companies are willing to invest in new projects, especially the more risky ones,” he added.

KiKa is currently coproducing shows such as Yakari (season three) with Storimages, Mediatoon, parent ARD and Bavarian pubcaster WDR; Guess How Much I Love You with Australian prodco SLR Productions and ARD-owned HR; Chloe’s Closet (season two) with Moonscoop; and a pair of TV movies from the live-action Krimi.de series, with Kinderfilm. Debertin said more series from ARD and fellow pubcaster ZDF would follow later this year.
