Keshet series gets Dutch adaptation

Drama series The A Word

Dutch public broadcaster EO has ordered a local adaptation of Keshet International (KI)’s drama series The A Word from fledgling Dutch prodco Fiction Valley.

Known locally as Het A Woord (6×50’), the six-part series follows a family’s journey of denial and introspection as they learn of their young son’s autism diagnosis. The series is based on KI’s family drama Yellow Peppers, which was adapted by the BBC in 2016.

The Dutch adaptation is written by Kevin van der Meer and Myranda Jongeling and is set to be directed by Anna van der Heide and Remy van Heugten, with Fiction Valley’s Annemieke van Vliet serving as exec producer on the title.

Het A Woord is expected to premiere later this year on NPO1.

Keren Shahar, KI’s chief operating officer and president of distribution, said: “The A Word is one of our most enduring shows that has already engaged millions of viewers around the globe. Fiction Valley’s re-imagining is a faithful homage to Keren Margalit’s original and we are thrilled that it has found a home on NPO via EO.”

Distributed internationally by KI, The A Word format has been adapted locally in Greece and in the UK, with the BBC1 adaptation’s third series set to premiere soon. KI’s US-based production arm, Keshet Studios, is currently developing an adaptation for American audiences.

KI has also sold the English language finished tape into over 80 territories to date, including the US (SundanceTV, Amazon, iTunes), Australia and New Zealand (BBC Australia), Sweden (SVT) and Brazil (Globosat).
