Keshet, De Mensen polish Diamonds

Israeli broadcaster Keshet’s international arm and Belgian prodco De Mensen have started development on an English-, Flemish- and French-language drama about the diamond industry.

Diamonds focuses on an ultra-Orthodox Jewish family who work in the jewel industry. The show, a coproduction between the two companies, is based on an idea from De Mensen’s Jan Theys, who will be producing the series.

It is being written by Israeli scribes Rotem Shamir (Fauda) and Yuval Yefet (Last of You), who are working in association with Belgian writer Paul Piedfort (Aspe).

The story is set in Belgium and follows the story of a man who returns from the US to save the family business after his brother commits suicide.

Atar Dekel, head of global original drama at Keshet International (KI), said the project “shows the strength of KI’s ability to attach highly talented Israeli writers and directors to international projects.”

“We want to give stories like Diamonds an organic and true coproduction model,” Dekel added. Keshet and De Mensen are in talks with other potential coproduction and co-finance partners.

KI and De Mensen have previously worked together on Keshet Studios’ remake of the Belgian prodco’s crime drama Salamander, which was piloted by ABC in the US last year but not ordered to series.
