Jurassic World toon stomps to Netflix

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous

Netflix is preparing an animated action-adventure series linked to the Jurassic Park movie franchise, produced by DreamWorks Animation (DWA) and with Steven Spielberg as an exec producer.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is set within the same timeline as 2015 blockbuster film Jurassic World, the fourth instalment in the dinosaur-focused Jurassic Park film series, and is inspired by the multibillion-dollar franchise from Universal Pictures and Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment.

Set to launch next year, it follows a group of six teenagers chosen for a once-in-a-lifetime experience at a new adventure camp on the opposite side of Isla Nublar, the fictional island setting of Jurassic World and other films in the franchise.

When dinosaurs wreak havoc across the island, the campers are stranded. Unable to reach the outside world, they must transition from strangers to friends and, ultimately, family if they are to survive.

Alongside Spielberg, who directed the first two Jurassic Park films, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous will be executive produced by Frank Marshall, Colin Trevorrow, Scott Kreamer and Lane Lueras, with the latter two execs also serving as showrunners. Zack Stentz is consulting producer.

The third instalment in the Jurassic World film series, which came after the original Jurassic Park trilogy, is due to premiere in 2021. The animated spin-off series is part of an ongoing multi-year agreement between DWA and Netflix to produce original animated kids and family programming.

This five-year relationship has seen 18 original series debut on the US-based streaming service, including the Tales of Arcadia trilogy from Guillermo del Toro, She-Ra & the Princesses of Power, Spirit Riding Free and The Boss Baby: Back in Business.

Following NBCUniversal’s acquisition of the studio, DWA and Netflix expanded their relationship to include first looks at animated series based on Universal Pictures properties as well as original and acquired IP.

DWA has a number of additional series slated to debut on Netflix in 2019, including Archibald’s Next Big Thing, from executive producer Tony Hale, and the Fast & Furious animated series.

In related news, Netflix is joining forces with Joe and Anthony Russo, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro’s Allspark Animation to adapt 25-year-old franchise Magic: The Gathering for the screen for the first time.

The Russo Brothers (Avengers: Infinity Wars, Avengers: Endgame) will executive produce the series, which will be animated by Bardel Entertainment.

Outside the toon genre, Netflix has renewed its dark comedy series Dead to Me for a second season. Produced by CBS Television Studios for Netflix, Dead to Me premiered on the platform last month. Creator Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls, One Big Happy) will return as showrunner and exec producer on season two.
