Responsible to: Managing Director
Direct Reports: Executive Producers; Series Producers, Producers
Functional Relationships with: Head of Marketing and Development, Head of Production Management, NHNZ Executive Team

Primary Objective
  • To provide creative direction to NHNZ Natural History productions through effective leadership; to ensure NHNZ creates and produces world-class quality entertaining productions that exceed client expectations
  • Creating narratives that underscore and grow the NHNZ brand. build exceptional teams, provide support and management on recruitment, editorial matters and creative content
  • Facilitate strong client relationships
  • Contribute to company strategy and business plans

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Leading the Creative Direction of NHNZ’s natural history content and implement creative strategy
  • Working with the MD/Leadership team to effectively get projects and process off the ground
  • Establishing clear and effective working relationships with Executive Producers
  • Leading, guiding and advising Executive Producers
  • Creating or adapting creative narratives that underscore and grow the NHNZ brand
  • Managing and executing multiple simultaneous productions
  • Liaising with key stakeholders regarding creative timelines, budgets and project plans
  • Managing and overseeing creative vendor relationships
  • Mentorship of creative and production staff
  • Fulfil the role of Executive Producer when required
  • Work with the Head of Production Management and Head of Marketing and Development

ROLE DESCRIPTION
  • To ensure smooth and clear transition of shows from Development to Production
  • Work with Head of Production Management to ensure productions are appropriately staffed and resourced to ensure productions deliver to expected schedule and that production expenditures operate within set budgets
  • Work with Manager Post Production to ensure post paths are as smooth and efficient as possible and that productions stay on schedule
  • Oversee a range of productions from archive shows to premium blue chip productions
  • Maintain financial and business acumen, and an understanding of the intricacies and operational demands of our production company
  • Establish and manage effectively relationships with networks/clients
  • Lead the production group by providing a strong sense of professionalism, creative direction, a clear and inspiring vision for all NHNZ programs and a supportive environment in which to work
  • Ensure NHNZ’s reputation, values and culture are understood, respected and represented professionally at all times
  • Provide challenge, leadership and inspiration in how natural history shows can best meet client and market demands and the interests of NHNZ
  • Encourage professional development within the production group
  • Identify trouble shooting issues, training needs and give regular feedback on performance
  • Act as a brand ambassador for NHNZ and represent the company as required at film festivals, seminars, conventions etc.

Organisation
  • Take an active interest and involvement in the strategic issues affecting NHNZ
  • Act in a way that is consistent with the overall interests of the company
  • Represent NHNZ as required, reflecting the values and culture of the company

Health & Safety
NHNZ sends film crews to work all over the world, in a variety of environments. These environments each have their own challenges in terms of Health and Safety Attention to Health and Safety is paramount to the welfare of people working for NHNZ and significantly important to our business.

You will be expected to attend and contribute to Health and Safety meetings as required.

Health & Safety - ROLE DESCRIPTION
  • Report any hazards or potential hazards to the HR Advisor promptly
  • To have a full understanding of Health and Safety procedures and ensure staff members are trained in Health and Safety best practices
  • Oversee Executive Producers, Producers and production teams regarding Health and Safety for travelling crews, ensure adequate Health and Safety measures are put in place to ensure their safety
  • Ensure Executive Producers are notifying the Human Resources Advisor of any incidents or near misses for themselves or crews and the appropriate forms are filled in
  • Look at processes and systems regarding health and safety in the annual performance review of the Executive Producers and Producers. Identify and organise any training required

Person Specification
  • Have a strong creative vision, coupled with an understanding of business objectives and how they intersect
  • Demonstrate experience working in nature programming, at a Senior level
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Leadership, people management and organisational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Constructive, collaborative approach with an ability to work autonomously and make decisions
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of all aspects of production
