Created by Bristol-based Plimsoll, the show marks the first new major natural history series for UK commercial broadcaster ITV for more than two decades.

ITVS is seeking international coproducers and deficit financing during the early stages of the 6×60′ programme’s development.

Featuring a story arc and unfolding like a drama, A Year on Planet Earth “draws on the most spellbinding and dramatic stories from all corners of the globe, showcasing the many wonders of the world, revealing the incredible ways in which all life is connected and how massive natural events affect the lives of individual animals,” according to ITVS.

“Combining extreme weather, breathtaking landscapes, epic wildlife spectacles and loveable animal characters, this series reveals our planet in a completely new light, uncovering how animals react and adapt to shifting habitats and unexpected events.”

The series comes from a blue-chip natural history team comprising Tom Hugh-Jones (Planet Earth II), Andrew Jackson (Frozen Planet) and Dr Martha Holmes (Blue Planet).

“We’re known for bringing some of the world’s most sought-after dramas to international audiences and are now thrilled to turbo-charge our premium factual content slate with this unique concept,” said Ruth Berry, ITVS MD of global distribution.
