iQiyi links with Nickelodeon in China

Chinese video streaming platform iQiyi is developing a children’s animation series alongside Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Asia.

Deer Run will be produced by iQiyi with creative supervision from VIMN-owned Nickelodeon Asia and marks the first time the latter is taking a Chinese original on its network from conception phase.

The CG-animated series will premiere on iQiyi and Zhejiang Satellite TV in China, but will air on Nickelodeon Asia in the summer of 2019.

VIMN will also explore the property’s licensing potential outside of China, upon completion of production.

The show follows four different deer characters as they overcome various obstacles and find themselves developing a strong friendship.

“With our distribution capability and track record in IP development, we believe Nickelodeon’s excellence in production and storytelling will extend our IP to kids in China and beyond,” said iQiyi chief content officer Wang Xiaohui.

Pierre Cheung, senior VP and general manager for Greater China at VIMN, added: “We chose this project because of its great story and compelling, relatable characters that resonate with the Nickelodeon brand.”
