Indigo inks US deals for Ultraman

UK-based distributor Indigo Entertainment has closed two deals in the US for Japanese series Ultraman.

Tsuburaya Productions’ Ultraman

Under the agreement with US-based Shout! Factory, the company will roll out a VoD strategy this year, extending the reach of the classic superhero property throughout North America.

The deal will see episodes of Ultraman released through Shout! Factory for its new streaming service TokuShoutsu and Roku boxes.

“It is the first time in the history of Ultraman that the official and carefully curated library has been so widely available in the US,” said David Lawley, MD of Indigo.

Lawley added that more than 500 hours of Ultraman, produced by Tsuburaya Productions, have also been licensed to North American physical distribution outfit Mill Creek Entertainment.

Mill Creek is developing a line of Steel Books, Blu-rays and DVDs for its licensed content, which includes remastered collections of 1966’s Ultra Q and Ultraman, with other titles to follow later this year.

Indigo has “spearheaded the official audiovisual regeneration of Ultraman in the Americas. Ultraman is seminal television that has inspired a multitude of global properties,” added Lawley, referring to earlier Ultraman deals with multi-channel pay TV company Olympusat for its channel Toku. Netflix also aired an original anime Ultraman series last year.

The company’s global licensing comes after a collaboration announced by Marvel Comics and Tsuburaya Productions to revive the comic property.

The Indigo deals were announced on what has been termed Ultraman Day 2020, the 54th anniversary of the debut of the character in television special Ultraman Eve: The Birth of Ultraman.
