ID consults ‘real Hannibal Lecter’

US cable network Investigation Discovery (ID) has commissioned an Australian prodco to make a series described as a “real-life Silence of the Lambs.”

Dark Minds (working title) is an eight-part factual crime series that sees best-selling crime author M William Phelps and serial killer expert John Kelly working together on unsolved murder cases.

Aiding the partnership is an anonymous source known only as ’13,’ who is a convict serving multiple life sentences for a series of murders. Similar to the Hannibal Lecter character in Silence of the Lambs, 13 will provide a unique insight into the thought processes of a serial killer.

Australia’s Beyond Productions will make the show, which will delve into eight cases that have puzzled detectives for years, including Detroit’s ‘Babysitter Killer’ and Atlantic City’s ‘Eastbound Strangler.’

“Dark Minds is reminiscent of a real-life Silence of the Lambs and is the latest example of ID pushing its storytelling techniques,” said Henry Schleiff, president and general manager of ID. He added that the hope was also to “provide valuable information to law enforcement officers investigating these unsolved crimes.”
