Hulu’s Holly Hobbie extended

Ruby Jay in Hulu series Holly Hobbie

US streamer Hulu has commissioned a second season of live-action children’s series Holly Hobbie.

Production on the 10-episode order is currently underway in Toronto, with the second season slated to debut on Disney-owned Hulu later this year ahead of also airing on Family Channel in Canada.

The show, a modern revival of the classic girls’ character brand that was popular in the 1970s and 80s, stars Ruby Jay as a small-town 14-year-old who saves her grandmother’s café by starting an open-mic night and performing original songs.

Produced by Aircraft Pictures in association with Cloudco Entertainment and Wexworks Media, Holly Hobbie premiered as a Hulu original last autumn and also aired on Canada’s Family Channel.

CBBC in the UK will launch the show’s first season this summer, with additional market debuts set to be announced shortly, including a French launch.

Ryan Wiesbrock, head of development and production at Cloudco Entertainment, said: “Season two of Holly Hobbie allows us to deepen and expand Holly’s relationships with her friends and family while throwing new characters and more original music into the mix.”

The series is produced with the financial participation of the Shaw Rocket Fund. Sarah Glinski (Degrassi: Next Class) will return as showrunner for the show’s second season.
