Hulu trumpets subs milestone

US online video service Hulu is said to be on course to hit one million subscribers, while the boss of shareholder Disney has said backers are “committed to selling” the site.

Hulu made the move into subscriptions a year ago with Hulu Plus. CEO Jason Kilar said yesterday it had 875,000 paying customer as of the end of June, and that he expected to exceed one million before the end of the summer.

Kilar’s comments come amid uncertainty over Hulu’s future. Disney president and CEO Robert Iger told the Wall Street Journal yesterday that partners in the joint venture – which also include FremantleMedia, Fox and Providence Equity Partners – were “committed to selling” the business.

The release of subscription figures is probably designed to make a purchase of Hulu more attractive, with US reports naming Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! as being among up to 10 potential buyers.

Kilar is now reportedly out of contract, according to The Wrap.
