Hulu readies RuPaul drama

Drag superstar RuPaul

Hulu is developing a drama series based on the life of reality TV host, drag queen star, actor and singer-songwriter RuPaul.

The US streaming service is working with the host of VH1’s reality hit RuPaul’s Drag Race and Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams on Queen (working title).

Set in 1980s New York during the Ronald Reagan era, the half-hour drama will detail RuPaul’s rise from club kid to drag queen, gay icon and global star, according to US reports.

It will be written by Gary Lennon, who will executive produce alongside RuPaul, Abrams and former BBC Drama boss Ben Stephenson, now of Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, which will work with World of Wonder and Warner Bros. Television on the show. World of Wonder’s Fenton Bailey, Tom Campbell and Randy Barbato will also exec produce.
