Hulu promotes to increase doc focus

Disney-owned US streamer Hulu has promoted senior exec Belisa Balaban to the new role of VP of original documentaries.

Balaban, previously original content director, will develop, produce and acquire original documentaries and non-fiction titles.

She joined Hulu in 2017 and has since launched original documentary films including Oscar-nominated Minding the Gap and Emmy-nominated Fyre Fraud. She also added original titles such as Crime + Punishment and Dr Ruth to the streamer’s slate.

Additionally, Hulu announced another two original factual titles, Hillary, a four-part series about former US First Lady and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and Greta, following the rise of teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Prior to joining Hulu, Balaban was the head of original programming at Participant Media’s network Pivot, as well as having served as senior VP of development at Actual Reality Pictures and setting up her own prodco alongside husband Ted Skillman.
