Hulu orders kids’ toon with LGBTQ lead

The Bravest Knight is based on a Hulu short

US streaming service Hulu and North American prodco Big Bad Boo Studios have begun production on a children’s series featuring an LGBTQ protagonist.

The Bravest Knight (13×11′) is based on the existing Hulu short The Bravest Knight That Ever Lived by children’s author Daniel Errico, which launched in 2016 and featured a marriage between two princes.

The series will see one of the princes from the short recount his fairytale adventures to his ambitious daughter, showing her the paths and pitfalls that await her on the way to knighthood.

Aimed at a family audience with a target focus of six- to nine-year-olds, the show will debut on Hulu later this year.

The move comes after Hulu ordered its first original series for a family audience, a reboot of Animaniacs, last month.

Hulu has said it is seeking to create “a premium content collection that connects with all kids and families through a diverse and inclusive approach to storytelling.”

Shabnam Rezaei, president and co-founder of Big Bad Boo, said: “This is a groundbreaking series, with all the elements of comedy, adventure and entertainment, with the addition of being about the heroes we see every day but never see on TV.

“Having an LGBTQ protagonist and a fierce, girl, not-yet-knight are just two of the things that excite me about the show.”
