06-01-2023

As 2023 gets underway, C21’s Digital Screenings showcases a new playlist of scripted and unscripted programmes that distributors worldwide are unveiling to buyers this month.

Documentary takes centre stage in this month’s playlist on C21’s Digital Screenings, with new titles hailing from distributors in Germany, the UK, France, Singapore and Japan.

From Germany comes two factual titles for buyers to check out: Surviving Hothouse Earth (ZDF Studios) and Great Lakes Untamed (Autentic Distribution). The first follows eco-scientists trying to find out what the future might bring by looking at evidence from past hothouse periods in Earth’s history, while the latter explores the natural history of Earth’s largest freshwater ecosystem: the five Great Lakes of North America.

From the UK comes The Soviet Union 100th Anniversary 1922 (3DD) which marks a century since the USSR was created, while Mariupol: The People’s Story (Abacus Media Rights) tells the story of the destruction of the Ukrainian city told with access to the people who lived there.

Meanwhile, Sex Before the Internet (Vice Distribution) explores a world before Pornhub and OnlyFans, an era when porn wasn’t available 24/7, and Don’t Hang Up the Phone (aka: Pervert: Hunting the Strip Search Caller) reveals the “shocking true story of a hoax caller who hit fast food chains across America,” according to distributor Asacha Media Group.

From Asian distributors comes a pair of documentary titles: Valley of the Bears (Bomanbridge Media), which explores a valley in which humans and bears try to coexist, and Explore Japan (Japan Program Catalog – BEAJ), which showcases a wide range of topics about Japan and its many well-known and lesser-known ‘worlds.’

For buyers looking for unscripted entertainment, this month’s playlist includes WWE Rivals (A+E Media Group), which follows superstars who “backstab and double-cross each other for merchandising deals, movie roles and more,” while The Yurt: Celebrity Green Challenge (RTBF) is a format in which three celebrities live for five days in the countryside in a furnished yurt facing various challenges.

Riddiculous (Sony Pictures Television Formats), meanwhile, is a hilarious new gameshow that keeps everyone’s brains ticking, and Guinness World Records: Gone Viral (Guinness World Records) is a sports-inspired series featuring amazing sport and fitness feats.

On the cooking reality front, Wonder Food – From Fiction to Reality (Chukyo TV Broadcasting) “challenges the most creative chefs of the country to bring alive amazing dishes spotted in fictional masterpieces of our times,” according to the producers.

Turning to scripted, dramas this month include The Pact (DCD Rights), which follows a 70-something woman with advanced Alzheimer’s while her family are also dealing with significant and complicated life events of their own.

Meanwhile, The Night Logan Woke Up (StudioCanal) is a Canadian drama “that combines humour, horror, drama and suspense, based on the realities and tragedies of life,” according to the company, and Les Disparus de la Forêt Noire (Banijay Rights) follows what happens when 12 bodies are found in a mass grave in the heart of the Black Forest.

For buyers of children’s content, this month we highlight a trio of titles: Pip & Posy (Magic Light Pictures), about two best friends whose lives revolve around a wonderful world of play; Dino Ranch (Boat Rocker), following the adventures of a family in a fantastical setting where dinosaurs still roam; and Super Sema (Cake), an African animated kids’ superhero franchise exec produced and starring Oscar-winning actor Lupita Nyong’o.

That’s all for January, stay tuned for more Hot Properties next month!
