Hopster secures TV distribution

Subscription-based preschool TV and learning app Hopster has launched on UK satellite platform Freesat and is set for further expansion with Amazon.

The deal between Hopster and Freesat means that ad-free episodes of Bob the Builder, Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom, Pingu and Angelina Ballerina will be available on the platform’s Freetime on-demand service.

Meanwhile, Hopster says its TV app will be available in more than one million households once it launches on other connected TV platforms, including the new EE TV and Amazon’s Fire TV.

The TV app comes after the launch of Hopster’s iOS app, which has now been downloaded by more than 180,000 families, according to the company.

It was set up in November last year by former Viacom Russia boss Nick Walters and secured a seven-figure funding round from investors including Viacom veterans Tony Orsten and Bhavneet Singh in May.

A Hopster subscription costs £3.99 (US$6.43) per month and allows access to the TV app as well as the Hopster app on iPad and iPhone, which features learning games and downloadable episodes.

The firm’s library currently consists of around of 1,200 U-rated episodes of children’s shows, after it signed content deals with the likes of Hit Entertainment and eOne Family.

“Our mission is to make screen time better for kids and the TV is still the number one screen in many family homes,” said CEO Walters.

“This is our first dedicated children’s on-demand player and shows just how committed we are to giving families the programmes they love ready to watch when they are,” said Emma Scott, Freesat’s outgoing MD.
