Hemingway starts new chapter in Euro, NZ

Hemingway makes its debut on PBS in April

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s six-hour documentary series Hemingway has been picked up by the BBC in the UK, Rai in Italy, Finland’s YLE, Norway’s NRK and Sky in New Zealand.

The series explores the life of Nobel Prize-winning American writer Ernest Hemingway and features interviews with writers and scholars as well as the author’s son Patrick.

It is narrated by Peter Coyote and features the voices of actors including Jeff Daniels, Patricia Clarkson and Meryl Streep, who bring Hemingway, his friends and family to life.

Written by Geoffrey C Ward and produced by Burns, Novick and Sarah Bolstein, Hemingway will premiere in the US on PBS in April, just ahead of the 60th anniversary of the author’s death.

Florentine Films and WETA Washington DC are the production companies for the docuseries, which was coproduced by Salimah El-Amin and Lucas Frank, with associate producers Vanessa Gonzalez-Block and Jonah Velasco. PBS International is handling global sales.

“Hemingway is both an intimate, turbulent family saga and an examination of some of the greatest works of literature in the 20th century. We are unsparing in our inquiry into less well-known aspects of his character and writing. Our intent is to offer viewers an honest portrayal of a complex and conflicted writer who left an indelible mark on literature,” said Burns.
