HBO has begun production on a documentary series from Mark Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas Production Company about an ex-cop who defrauded a McDonald’s game promotion for a decade.

McMillions reveals how the former officer became a security auditor at the fast-food giant and rigged its Monopoly game, stealing millions of dollars and building a vast network of co-conspirators across the US.

The series comes from the non-scripted production company launched by Hollywood actor Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Archie Gips, and producing partners James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte. The latter two will direct the series.

The series will draw on exclusive first-hand accounts and archive footage featuring the FBI agents who brought down the gaming scam, the McDonald’s corporate executives who were defrauded, the lawyers who tried the case and the culprits and prizewinners who profited from the complicated scheme.

“Having been obsessed with the game as children and now developing this story for years, we’re thrilled to partner with Unrealistic Ideas and HBO, who both share our passion for this incredible case,” said Hernandez and Lazarte in a joint statement.
