HBO’s programming includes Game of Thrones

Premium pay TV network HBO is to close down all of its linear channels and VoD operation in the Netherlands.

HBO Netherlands’ channels HBO1, HBO2, HBO3, HBO On Demand and TV everywhere service HBO Go will all cease to be distributed.

The channels are run as a 50-50 joint venture with cable TV platform Ziggo, which is owned by US cable giant Liberty Global.

HBO and Ziggo will now launch a different service for the Dutch market that features HBO programming, including Game of Thrones, Ballers, The Night Of and True Detective.

HBO Netherlands launched in 2012 in the same year as HBO rolled out HBO Nordic for Scandinavia.

An HBO spokesman said: “HBO and Ziggo will announce a different service for the Dutch market featuring HBO programming later this year.”

An average subscription to the HBO package is €15 (US$16) but a number of operators, including KPN in the Netherlands, offer it as a free add-on to their packages.

Across Europe, HBO has output deals with European satcaster Sky for its content to air on Sky Atlantic channels.

The news comes after HBO Europe rejigged its channel line-up in Central and Eastern Europe in March.
