HBO, streamers take home Globes

HBO’s Big Little Lies has been extended into a second season

HBO was the big TV winner at the 2018 Golden Globes last night, picking up four awards for its hit show Big Little Lies.

The dark comedy-drama, which follows three women living seemingly perfect lives as they become embroiled in a series of crimes, won the gong for Best Television Limited Series for Motion Picture Made for Television.

It also secured three of the four acting awards in that strand for Nicole Kidman (Best Actress) and Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgård (Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor, respectively.)

The awards success is a welcome fillip for HBO after it ordered a second season of the show in December.

Elsewhere, the rise of SVoD supremacy continued apace with streamers picking up five of the six awards aimed directly at TV.

Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale mirrored last year’s seminal Emmy triumph by being named Best Drama and with Elisabeth Moss taking the Best Actress award.

Amazon won two awards for The Marvelous Mrs Maisel in the Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy strand, picking up the overall gong and Best Actress for Rachel Brosnahan.

It was a disappointing night for SVoD pioneer Netflix which came back with only one award from over 10 nominations: Aziz Ansari for Best Actor in a musical or comedy for Master of None.

However, it was a historical night for Sterling K Brown who became the first black man to win Best Actor in a TV series award for his role in NBC’s This Is Us.

In a night of symbolic moments, women from all parts of the entertainment industry made a gesture of solidarity, in wake of the recent sexual harassment scandals that have rocked Hollywood, by wearing all-black dress on the red carpet.

The protest, which was in support of the Time’s Up campaign against sexual harassment, follows on from the #MeToo social media crusade which arose after the numerous harassment cases of film and TV mogul Harvey Weinstein came to light in October.
