HBO orders first Nordics original

Lukas Moodysson and friends

HBO Europe has greenlit its first Scandinavian original series, a comedy from its HBO Nordic arm.

Gösta (working title) is an eight-part comedy written and directed by Swedish filmmaker Lukas Moodysson. It focuses on a 28-year-old child psychologist who gets his first job in a small rural town.

The show will be Moodysson’s first television series and is being produced by Memfis Film. TrustNordisk is handling international sales outside HBO Europe territories.

Lars Jönsson, Moodysson’s long-term collaborator at Memfis Film, is producing the 8×45’ series. Executive Producers for HBO are Hanne Palmquist, Steve Matthews and Antony Root. Shooting will start next year for an expected 2019 premiere.

The commission is the first original from HBO Nordic, which last year appointed former Danish Film Institute and SVT executive Hanne Palmquist as commissioning editor and VP of original programming to focus on originals from the region.

Moodysson, who will direct all eight episodes, said: “I want Gösta to be a mix of comedy and Dostoevsky; as funny as possible and as serious as possible.”
