HBO Max, ZDF welcome The Tourist

WarnerMedia-owned US streamer HBO Max and German pubcaster ZDF have boarded BBC and Stan drama The Tourist.

Jamie Dornan

Commissioned a year ago by BBC1 in the UK and Australian streamer Stan, the show will now be carried by HBO Max in the US and ZDF in Germany.

Jamie Dornan (The Fall, Fifty Shades of Grey) has been cast as the lead in the six-parter, which is being produced by UK prodco Two Brothers Pictures (Baptiste, The Missing, Fleabag).

Two Brothers founders Harry and Jack Williams are writing the series, which will go into production later this year and is being shopped internationally by All3Media International.

The 6×60’ thriller focuses on a British man who wakes in an Australian hospital with no recollection of who he is after being pursued through the outback by a truck trying to drive him off the road.

Danielle Macdonald (Unbelievable, Dumplin’, Patti Cakes) will also star as a fledgling probationary constable, while Shalom Brune-Franklin (Line of Duty, Roadkill) will play a waitress who is swept into the man’s journey for answers.

Highview Productions is also on board the project, as is the South Australian Film Corporation.

Christopher Aird (Baptiste, Liar, Clique) and Andrew Benson will executive produce for Two Brothers Pictures, with Tommy Bulfin (Normal People, Line of Duty, Peaky Blinders) exec producing for the BBC. Lisa Scott (A Sunburnt Christmas, The Hunting) will produce and Chris Sweeney (Liar, Back to Life) will executive produce and direct.

The Tourist was commissioned by Piers Wenger, director of BBC Drama, and Charlotte Moore, BBC chief content officer.
