HBO Max stands up for comedy specials

HBO Max has ordered stand-up specials from comedians Phoebe Robinson, Colin Quinn and Aida Rodriguez.

Phoebe Robinson

Robinson’s first solo stand-up comedy special will see the actor and author dive into quarantining with her boyfriend, moderating on Michelle Obama’s book tour and failing at being a social justice warrior, among other topics.

Robinson started her relationship with HBO via 2 Dope Queens, the podcast she co-hosts with Jessica Williams that became the basis of multiple HBO specials.

The as-yet-untitled special will be executive produced by Robinson, whose Tiny Reparations company is producing.

HBO Max has also ordered Summer of 2020: A Drive-In Comedy Special (working title), which will be headlined by Colin Quinn, who will also direct.

The comedians featured in the show will be recorded at a repurposed drive-in movie theatre in Brooklyn to allow audience members to enjoy the show while social distancing.

It is produced by Above Average and executive produced by M Blair Breard, Marc Lieberman and Brian Stern of AGI Entertainment.

Suzanna Makkos, executive VP of original comedy and animation for HBO Max, said: “The fantastic group of comedians Colin’s selected, most of whom have not performed in front of a live audience for months, will allow the viewer a window into how the pandemic has impacted this art form. Utilising a drive-in movie theatre allows comics a unique way to connect with the audience while also prioritising safety.”

Comedian, actor and producer Aida Rodriguez, meanwhile, has a stand-up comedy special coming to HBO Max in which she discusses ‘cancel culture’ and the social issues of the day. The special will be produced by Art & Industry.

The trio of comedians join HBO Max’s slate of stand-up offerings, with previously announced specials from Chelsea Handler, Tracy Morgan, Marlon Wayans, John Early and Ahir Shah, along with a slate of five specials from Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco. This includes solo specials from Moses Storm and Chris Redd.

HBO Max launched in May with specials on the platform including Rose Matafeo: Horndog, Beth Stelling: Girl Daddy, James Veitch: Straight to VHS and the Latinx multi-act special HA Comedy Festival: The Art of Comedy, hosted by Anjelah Johnson.
