HBO Max moves to The Middle

The Middle aired on ABC between 2009 and 2018

WarnerMedia-owned US streaming service HBO Max has picked up exclusive SVoD rights to Patricia Heaton-fronted comedy The Middle.

The Middle, a single-camera comedy about raising a family and lowering your expectations, aired for nine seasons on US broadcast network ABC between 2009 and 2018.

HBO Max has secured exclusive US streaming rights to all 215 episodes, produced by Blackie and Blondie Productions in association with Warner Bros Television.

The pick-up continues an arms race among US streaming service for the rights to classic comedy libraries. HBO Max is already the home to fellow Warner Bros comedies The Big Bang Theory and Friends, which it secured in big-money deals ahead of its launch.

Netflix acquired Seinfeld around the same time, while NBCUniversal’s Peacock has The Office.

The Middle was created and executive produced by Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline. In addition to Heaton, the comedy stars Neil Flynn, Charlie McDermott, Eden Sher and Atticus Shaffer.
