HBO Max finds Young Love

Short film Hair Love was released last August

US streamer HBO Max has greenlit an animated series based on Oscar-winning short film Hair Love, from creator Matthew A Cheery and Sony Pictures Animation.

Young Love is a 12-episode 2D animation created for the WarnerMedia-owned streamer by Cherry, who will showrun with veteran animation creative Carl Jones (The Boondocks, Black Dynamite).

The series will be executive produced by Blue Key Entertainment’s Monica A Young (producer of Hair Love) along with Lion Forge Animation’s David Steward II and Carl Reed.

Hair Love centred on the relationship between an African-American father and his daughter Zuri, looking at the most daunting task a father could ever come across – doing his daughter’s hair for the first time. The series will expand on the characters and family from the short with new plotlines.
