HBO Max, Cartoon Network order together

Two seasons of Tiny Toons Looniversity have been commissioned

HBO Max and Cartoon Network are set to share a host of forthcoming animated series, including a Tiny Toons spin-off from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television.

Tiny Toons Looniversity has received a two-season order from HBO Max and Cartoon Network, which share a parent company in WarnerMedia.

Executive produced by Spielberg alongside Sam Register, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank, it comes from Warner Bros Animation (WBA) and Amblin Television.

The half-hour animated comedy series features characters from Tiny Toon Adventures, which originally aired in the 1990s, and sees them perfect their cartoony craft while studying under the Looney Tunes.

Erin Gibson (Throwing Shade podcast) will serve as showrunner and co-executive producer. Nate Cash (Adventure Time) is also on board as co-executive producer. Clint LaVigne, VP of television at Amblin Television, and Audrey Diehl, senior VP of series at WBA, will oversee day-to-day creative affairs on the series.

“Tiny Toons Looniversity will capture all the clever, subversive and smart humour that made Tiny Toon Adventures such a standout series,” said Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics.

HBO Max and Cartoon Network have also ordered a supernatural animated action series from Primal, Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory creator Genndy Tartakovsky.

Produced by Cartoon Network Studios, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal has been inspired by myths and lore from across the globe and follows a team of ancient teen heroes as they work together to protect the world from an unforeseen omen.

Meanwhile, HBO Max and Cartoon Network are also working together on three projects today with New York Times bestselling children’s book author, illustrator and playwright Mo Willems.

The two have greenlit animated series Unlimited Squirrels!; ordered CGI animated special Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Special; and handed a pilot order to live-action series Cat the Cat’s Show the Show Show with YOU the YOU!.

Greg Silverman’s Stampede Ventures is Willems’ producing partner on the projects, which Cartoon Network and HBO Max said would encourage viewers to feel comfortable in their own skin.

Kristen McGregor is the showrunner and also co-writes with Willems, who exec produces alongside Silverman and Jay Judah.

Ascheim said: “Mo’s creative vision and profound legacy is a remarkable force that has the power to shape the future of kids’ and family programming. This collaboration is integral to reaching children and adults simultaneously in different and unique ways that are also incredibly fun for everyone.”
