HBO in production on George Carlin doc

HBO Documentary Films, Rise Films and Apatow Productions are producing a two-part doc about the late US comedian George Carlin.

From directors Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The King of Staten Island) and Michael Bonfiglio (From the Ashes, Paris to Pittsburgh), the documentary will feature a mix of conversation with Carlin’s family and friends, material from his stand-up routines, TV appearances and personal archive material.

Carlin, who died in 2008 aged 71, was best known for his irreverent dark comedy and reflections on US society.

Exec producing are Apatow, Carlin’s daughter Kelly Carlin, Rise Films MD and founder Teddy Leifer and film producer and friend of Carlin’s Jerry Hamza.

“The sting of his [Carlin’s] words is as sharp now as when he was on stage. Carlin is the comedian’s comedian who mastered his craft and shaped American counterculture such that he paved the way for a generation of comics that followed,” said Leifer.
